The ancient olive trees of Pedruxella Gran produce a premium oil that is delicious and unique to the island. The oil is extra virgin, organic and is registered as a “slow food” product because it is harvested using traditional methods and practices.
Situated on the south-facing slope above the Val D’en March, the terraces gets sun and are protected from weather. The Moors built the terraces and planted trees over 500 years ago, grafting the Empeltre variety onto “bastard” Mallorquin olive trees (bastard refers to the fact that the trees do not produce olives). Pedruxella Gran is one of the last olive estates to operate its own ancient Tafona or olive press.
Today, the olives are still grown completely naturally, using no chemicals or water. The olive oil is pressed and bottled in modern sanitary and ecological conditions at a nearby cooperative. To ensure that the oil is extra virgin, the olives are stored using methods that reduce fermentation (and thus acidity). All of this requires extra labor, care and time, but the final result is well worth the effort. Most importantly, there is nothing but pure olive oil in our product.
